Communications Campaign Brief

After the legislature in Statia revised the traffic laws, Johnson led the team at GIS Statia in the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy to raise awareness about the changes. The campaign focused on four key safety provisions: mandatory seatbelt usage, helmet requirements for motorcyclists, proper mobile phone handling whilst driving, and child safety seat regulations.

Strategic Approach

Working with local talent and featuring ordinary Statians, Johnson crafted a multi-channel campaign that emphasised the importance of road safety through relatable scenarios and compelling messaging. The communications plan methodically addressed the key aspect of the new ordinance with tailored content designed to resonate with the island community.

Campaign Elements

The campaign featured several integrated components:

“Click it, don’t risk it” – A seatbelt awareness initiative reminding drivers and passengers that buckling up is not merely a suggestion but a legal requirement. The messaging highlighted that whilst one may be an excellent driver, unforeseen circumstances make seatbelts essential protection.

“Snap it before you crank it” – A powerful helmet safety message targeting motorcyclists. This element framed helmets not just as legal requirements but as promises to loved ones and commitments to personal safety.

“The call can wait, your life can’t” – Mobile phone safety messaging that encouraged drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and off their phones. This component emphasised that safety takes precedence over connectivity.

“It’s not just a seat – it’s a lifeline” – Child safety seat promotion targeting parents and carers of young children. The campaign underscored that proper restraints for children aged three or younger are non-negotiable safety measures.

Channel Strategy

The communications plan incorporated diverse channels to ensure maximum reach:

  • Visual media – PSAs featuring local citizens demonstrating proper safety behaviour
  • Social media – Targeted messaging across platforms frequented by Statian drivers
  • Video content – Short, impactful clips reinforcing safety messages
  • Press engagement – Strategic media releases timed to coincide with enforcement dates

Impact

The campaign successfully transformed technical legal changes into accessible, memorable guidance for the Statian public. By featuring ordinary Statians in authentic island settings like White Wall and Zeelandia, Johnson and the GIS Statia team created a campaign that resonated with local drivers whilst delivering crucial safety information. The child safety seat promotion and the helmet PSA garnered over 40,000 views on Facebook – not bad for an island of only about 3,200 people.

Through thoughtful messaging that emphasised personal responsibility rather than mere compliance, the campaign positioned road safety as a community value rather than simply a legal obligation.
